Raw steel plate is never of exact proportions so one of the first jobs is mark out certain fixed reference points for the build.
The first of these being the centre line this is marked out using a chalk line and then centre popped at regular intervals down the line.
Next the procedure is repeated for a left and right hand line taking the centre line as reference. The hull sides will follow the lines rather than relying on the base plate edge being true.
